i went shopping in the city with my mum today and bought some kick arse shoes (more on that later). as a teen - which was the nineties and the grunge era let's not forget - she was always urging me to wear colours, and to "make something of myself".
so today i did. take that, judy. i am even wearing my favourite red lipstick. coffee shop boys insisted i do some promo this morning, so here's me pointing at menu items. the dress is one from the other night, which kimmy bought for six dollars in an op shop in pacific palms.

i thought i'd include a photo of my mum judy in there 'cause she looked cute today - with apologies to my sisters who will be startled and perhaps frightened to see her here. i'm always rousing on her to dress "age appropriately" and have spent years explaining how, ie no bingo arms on display, not too much chest, never boob and thigh together.
although i dread to think of what she gets up to when i'm not around, she makes an effort to get it right around me and i appreciate it. in fact today in the shoe store she whispered and pointed out an older lady who was dressed like she was 25 and I gave her a "you see" face. she saw.
she looks pretty damn good for 64, i reckon, and so did the girl at the MAC counter who was sweet enough to give her a makeover. mum was of the era where people used vegetable oil as tanning lotion, so her skin is doing it a bit tough now but i still think she looks good for her age. it heartens me, genetically, because i have smoked but generally avoid the sun so reckon i've got a good shot.
people tell me we share the same smile, although i am my father's daughter, with his brow, cheekbones, height and nose (thank christ).

finally, a special guest entry from the MAC counter dudes, who vogued like nobody's business with very little provocation. Joanne on the left was the sweetheart but the guy looked like he'd designed his makeup to look like he'd been in a streetfight, with this massive purple mess on the side of his right eye.
i have sooo much to say about this post! where to start?
ReplyDeletedress - love it!!! the top part isn't something i see much, shows off your arms nicely!!
grunge - i used to borrow my FATHER'S clothes, not my mothers. in particular his army pants.. .
genetics - i too think i'm going to be lucky in that department. my mum claims she will visit in may so i will post a pic if and when that ever comes to pass! you do indeed have the same smile lady. i was suprised she was so short - my folks had a similar height thing happening(mum 5ft 4, dad 6ft 7)
the boob/thigh but not both rule - you introduced me to this, i had never heard it before. so i am pleased that you didn't just make it up for my benefit as a subtle hint (i recall rejecting it).
and those mac people... amazing!! that guy has more makeup on than i've worn all month. well done getting such a posed pic xx
